Description
This semester, Young Industry Studio offers the unique and exciting experience of working with ATYP’s international Artist in Residence, writer/director/actor Ryo Harada, and renowned Australian director Sophie Kelly to explore cross-cultural storytelling and to create a brand new work! The ensemble will explore true stories and experiences of young people in Japan, and find resonances with their own contemporary lives in Australia, crafting a show that represents these stories. At the end of the semester the ensemble will perform this new work across a three show season.
This course will include training in:
- Playmaking and Devising
- Voice and character
- Movement and visual theatre
- Performance techniques
- Production week basics
Venue: ATYP, Pier 2-3, Suite 2, 13A Hickson Road, Dawes Point
Price: $750 (Scholarship placements are available)
Time: Mondays: 4:30pm – 7:30pm, Sundays 9:30am – 1:30pm. (TBC: Wednesdays 4:30pm – 7:30pm)
Auditions: 17th – 19th July 4pm – 6pm
Rehearsals start: 4 August 2024
Tech Week and Performance Dates: 19th – 27th October

The Artists
Ryo Harada
Ryo Harada is a distinguished Director and Playwright with a rich background in drama and theatre arts. He graduated from San Francisco State University, majoring in Drama, and has since founded C.C.C.THEATER and Platanus, two influential theatre groups.
Throughout his career, Ryo has achieved significant milestones. He participated in the Next Generation Program at Assitej in Poland and Norway as an alumni, and has been involved in numerous international projects, serving as an actor, creator, assistant director, and interpreter. His contributions to the field have been recognised with his selection for the Japanese Government Overseas Study Program for Artists.
Ryo’s expertise lies in Nonverbal Theatre, Devising, and Physical Theatre. These skills have enabled him to create compelling and innovative performances that resonate with diverse audiences.
Currently, Ryo is working at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) as an International Artist in Residency, where he continues to develop and direct engaging theatrical productions.
Sophie Kelly
Sophie is a director, actor and theatre maker with a particular interest in the creation of new work. Sophie is a graduate of VCA School of Drama (Bachelor of Performing Arts (Acting)) and the University of Sydney Law School (LLB).
As a director, Sophie has worked for Bell Shakespeare, Ensemble Theatre, NIDA, ATYP, The Q Theatre, Newtown High School of the Performing Arts and the North Queensland Academy of Dramatic Arts. Her most recent directing projects include The Human Experience (Bell Shakespeare); Associate Director, Romeo and Juliet (Bell Shakespeare); Just Macbeth!, a collaboration between Bell Shakespeare and the NSW Arts Unit; Such Sweet Sorrow and Just Romeo and Juliet for Bell Shakespeare’s Players (2023 – 2019 National Tours) and Originate: Our House for the Q Theatre. In 2022, Sophie was awarded the Sandra Bates Ensemble Theatre Directors Award, which enabled her to work as Assistant Director on four productions including A Dolls House, The One, Photograph 51 and Boxing Day BBQ. Sophie was an Artist in Residence with The Sydney Opera House Creative Leadership in Learning Program from 2020-2023. Sophie is currently working on a development of Donna Abela’s new work Stella Started It which was a recipient of a 2023 Create NSW Grant.
As an actor, alongside numerous short-film and television guest roles, Sophie’s performance credits include Tattoo and Motortown (Griffin Theatre Company); After All This (Elbow Room, Green Room Award for Best Independent Production and Best Performance at the Melbourne Fringe, 2011); The Waiting Room (STC Rough Drafts); Titus: The Ultimate Murder Ballad Musical (Darlinghurst Theatre); Hamlet and Measure for Measure (Complete Works Theatre Company) Sophie was part of the 2014 PWA Dramaturgy Internship and is also a recipient of the 2002 Pratt Foundation Award.
