Ambassador Opportunities

Rose Byrne and Rebel Wilson Support Young Artists

ATYP Ambassadors Rebel Wilson and Rose Byrne are both alumni of the theatre company and are generously supporting these two opportunities. The scholarship and the commission have different selection criteria but both are centred around identifying, nurturing and promoting the next generation of theatre artists. Recipients receive a cash prize, twelve months mentoring with ATYP, and an opportunity to present the outcome to an industry audience at the end of the year.

Rebel Wilson Comedy CommissionRose Byrne Scholarship

Rebel Wilson donated $10,000 per year for three years (2016-2018) to fund the Rebel Wilson Theatremaker Scholarship that was awarded to an emerging artist interested in generating their own content. The recipient was any combination of the following: actor / writer / producer.

In 2019, Rebel decided to revisit this idea and has created the Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission available for young female identifying writers (aged 18-26). 

To apply for the 2021 Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission please provide:

  • Your theatrical CV. (Max. 2 pages)
  • A project brief (Max 2 pages) that includes:
    • A synopsis of the show you want to write
    • An outline of the inspiration/reason for the idea/s driving the story
    • Very brief biography (maximum 300 words)
    • An outline of your preferred development time-line
  • 2 x letters of support

To be eligible for the Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission applicants must:

  • Be female identifying
  • Be 18 – 26 years old
  • Have experience in writing, playwriting and/or comedy

In their 12 months with ATYP recipient of Rebel Wilson Comedy Commission will receive:

  • A $15,000 play writing commission
  • The opportunity to spend 12 months as part of ATYP, one of Australia’s flagship theatre companies including:
      • 12 months dramaturgical support;
      • a desk and space to work;
      • mentoring from relevant team members to further your projects and
      • access to ATYP’s resources and rehearsal space
  • Two script development workshops
  • The commission will culminate in a rehearsed reading coordinated by ATYP featuring invited guests from the theatre, playwriting and comedy industry
  • The opportunity to meet with and receive advice from actor/writer/comedian/producer Rebel Wilson

Conditions:

  • First right of refusal to produce the resulting work to Rebel’s own production company Camp Sugar to produce the stage play
  • First right of refusal to Rebel’s own production company Camp Sugar to produce a screen adaptation of the finished play
  • The play can be about anything you like … but it should be driven by a character or characters under 26 and should be classed primarily as a comedy or dramedy.

Selection Process:

  • ATYP’s Artistic Director, Resident Dramaturg and other staff members shortlist five outstanding candidates. Applications are assessed based on relevant experience, achievement, and the clarity of rationale for how the scholarship will be used to further the applicant’s artistic career.

Shortlisted applications are sent to Rebel Wilson who will make the final selection.
