Hello MTV welcome to our crib 🎭
Happy New Year! Who’s EXCITED?! There are so many reasons to feel positive about 2022 that right now we’ve all got one of Rebel’s signature mega-watt smiles on. Oh and we’re packing boxes. Lots of boxes. The day we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived and on Monday17 January we received the keys to our new forever-home in the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct! You might have caught this lovely feature in the Sydney Morning Herald!
The first show in The Rebel Theatre will be The Deb, and we want to give everyone the best possible chance to enjoy it. In light of this, and in the interest of safety for our patrons, artists and staff we have pushed back the opening of The Deb to 22 April 2022. We are contacting all our stellar ticket holders directly regarding these new dates which will go on sale from Thursday 27 January. Trust me, you really don’t want to miss the stunning line-up of Aussie talent in this hilarious, heart-warming, and uproarious Australian musical about friendship, courage, and the beauty of coming out as yourself.
Across the 2022 season, we also have a number of free in conversation events for you to meet and chat to some of the very talented individuals we are working with this year. Places are limited so make sure you register here. We can’t wait to welcome you all to a performance in our fully-professional 2022 season, or one of our Semester classes from 7 February. We’re proud to affirm that all of our staff are fully vaccinated and we continue to follow the most stringent COVID safety measures in our workshops.
Our new building might look shiny, but as of this month our Australia Council funding has been fully withdrawn and we are relying more than ever on the generosity of our supporters to continue all of our important programs. There’s still time to donate to the ATYP Foundation’s capital campaign and help secure the future of Australia’s national youth theatre. With fewer than 23 seats without dedications in The Rebel Theatre, why not make like a philanthropist and buy a seat? To show our appreciation, our donors will be among the first to experience the new venue during our launch festival (what else would you call a celebration that runs over several weeks?).
Our Summer Holiday Drama Workshop program has been running in venues across Sydney and we reckon the only thing cooler than La Niña is an ATYP workshop participant. A big thank you to everyone who came along, their parents and guardians as you all demonstrated terrific enthusiasm and resilience as that sneaky virus played havoc with a few aspects of the program.
And now for an exciting piece of news that is very close to my heart: from Saturday 12 February, ATYP will be offering term-based, after-hours drama classes for K-12 at the McDonald College, my alma mater. If you are based in Western Sydney it’s a great opportunity to experience ATYP in this new North Strathfield venue. Be quick to book, and tell them I sent you.
Have an extraordinary 2022 everyone and we’ll see you soon, for real.
Johanna
