What’s on in September!
Hello, ATYP, this is Martha speaking!
Coming at you from the front desk of our office at Pier 2/3, I’m Martha – the receptionist with the mostest. I have the pleasure of being ATYP’s Administration Trainee, meaning I’m across everything from phone calls and grocery shopping to running the YABbies and supporting ATYP’s many, many programs.
Before I continue, we’d like to say a huge thank you to all those who wrote a submission to the National Cultural Policy. You can read the submission our good friend Rebel Wilson wrote in support of access to the arts for young people, here.
Back to our many, many programs… Happy Spring! September is shaping up to be a busy one, with Holiday workshops, productions, and Work Experience all going gangbusters.
Last week, 16 teenagers from across Greater Sydney and beyond joined us in Walsh Bay to take part in our Work Experience program. They spent the week learning about what goes on behind the scenes of a professional theatre company, as well as bringing their own vibrant energy and ideas to the table. We absolutely loved having so many bright and passionate young people in the office last week, we already miss their faces – although I’m sure we’ll be seeing these emerging writers, producers, actors, and directors back in our offices and on our stages very soon.
Meanwhile, across the Tasman, our next production, Past the Shallows, is set to open in Hobart in only a few weeks! Seeing the rehearsal process from interstate through the eyes of Zoom has been a unique experience, but I can safely say the show is shaping up to be something special. Chookas to the Past the Shallows team and we can’t wait to welcome you to Sydney in October for our final production of the year!
…Or is it? I am excited to report that our wonderful Workshops team have revived our Foundation Commission program and will be presenting a short season of George Kemp’s Shack at The Rebel Theatre this November as part of the Young Industry Studio program. Two talented casts of young people aged 10-13 have been getting busy sinking their teeth into this script through a weekly workshops program and they are absolutely buzzing to present Shack to the ATYP community! Having sat in on their table read earlier this week I can tell you this is not one to miss. Congratulations to the Shack team for what is shaping up to be a highlight of the ATYP 2022 calendar.
Spring school holidays are just around this corner and I’m keen to see young people flooding our spaces once more for our School Holiday Drama courses. If you’re not enrolled yet, head to our website quick sticks! Our jam-packed holiday offerings are always sure to sell out and you don’t want to miss what we’ve lined up this Spring.
See you around in September everyone! We’ve got lots happening and we’re stoked about it.
