💛❤ February is for the Love of Theatre ❤💛
I’m writing this month’s introduction from a hotel room in Los Angeles. We are here to showcase the Rebel Wilson and Rose Byrne Scholarship winners Maddie Nunn and Imogen Gardam. Our partners, the team at Australian Theatre Company based here in LA, are hosting us for the week and introducing Imogen and Maddie to the American industry. Yesterday we auditioned a collection of young Australian actors who will do a rehearsed reading of the new play that Maddie has written. It was a slightly surreal experience sitting in a hotel conference room on the other side of the world auditioning Australian actors for a play to be presented to an American audience, but it’s definitely a great way to start 2019.
Of course at home in Sydney there is much excitement about Intersection 2019: Arrival that opened last week. Written by ten of Australia’s leading emerging playwrights and featuring a cast of exceptional young adult actors, Arrival offers an insight into the intense, turbulent and often hilarious world of young characters on the cusp of adulthood. Directed by Sophie Kelly this show is the hot ticket in town this month. Get in quickly to make sure you don’t miss out.As our Workshops Coordinator Claudene signed off a hugely successful Summer Holiday workshop program at the end of January, Workshops Manager Rob jumps straight into our incredibly popular weekly program. Things never stop in the world of workshops. There are still some places available so if you (or a young person you know) are keen for some drama in your life this term, jump onto the ATYP website or call the office. You’ll need to get in quickly to secure your place.
For those that are particularly organised and are already looking to the next school holidays, the program will be up on the website very soon. Keep an eye on your inbox for a notice on what’s on offer..Our Fresh Ink national mentoring program is calling for applications from this week in Sydney and Perth. You can see full details on the website. Emerging writers based in Darwin hold onto your hats, we should be calling for your applications soon. In the meantime, if you want to discuss the program and what’s involved you can contact our Resident Dramaturg Jane FitzGerald or me.As always there’s plenty to get involved in at ATYP this month. If you are based out of Sydney and want to track down drama workshops near you then give us a call and we’ll put you in touch with youth arts companies in your area.
Until next month,
Fraser
