Developing New Australian Work: Actors in the Development Room

Increasingly in Australia and internationally, actors are being asked to bring life to new writing in short-form developments with directors and writers. Often there isn’t time for detailed work or understanding, so how do you navigate this unique situation and ensure that you are assisting the creative team as they also grapple with the text?

Join ATYP’s Artistic Associate Hayden Tonazzi and Resident Artist George Kemp for a masterclass on how to be an effective collaborator when developing new Australian writing. Using the radio play Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, the performers will be given a theatrical container to explore in this masterclass that will culminate in a workshop presentation to ATYP staff as if the work is being pitched.

Actors participating in this program will develop key skills in:

  • Bringing life and character to unfamiliar text;
  • Collaborating with a director and writer within the context of a development room;
  • World-building by making informed and bold offers;
  • Dramaturgy for theatre.

ATYP’s Industry Studio Program offers participants aged 18-26 an opportunity to learn from Australia’s leading artists and continue to develop their professional practice.

Please note: there is no fee for participating in this program. Applications close 30 October.
