Have your say on the future of Australian arts

Join ATYP in making a submission to the National Cultural Policy by 22 August and send a message to the federal government that young people have value and deserve opportunities to tell their stories and see themselves reflected in our culture.

It’s easy!

In 500 characters, share your thoughts on what young people’s engagement with the arts means to you and help safeguard a diverse, vibrant and sustainable arts, entertainment and cultural sector now and into the future.

Theatre Network Australia has put together this useful guide on how to make a submission. You don’t need to be a policy expert, just write about your own experience and what you would like to see changed or improved in future.

In the same year that ATYP has been provided a state-of-the-art facility by the NSW government, our federal funding comes to an end! It is time to make young people a priority for the government and we need a groundswell of public support.

Together with our Youth Arts colleagues, ATYP is putting forward four key recommendations, which you may wish to include in your submission (and give your word count a bump!). They are:

  1.     Include “Young People’s Engagement with the Arts ” as a priority of the National Cultural Plan.
  1.     Establish an ongoing, dedicated funding stream for Young People’s Engagement with the Arts for companies whose core business is young people’s engagement, administered by the Australia Council for the Arts;
  1.     Establish targeted, cross-department streams of funding for Young People’s Engagement to work with Health and Mental Health, Employment, Youth Justice, Regional Youth and Education – co-managed by the Australia Council.
  1.     Establish Advisory Boards that represent the diversity of young Australians, managed independently, as ongoing standing committees for the Australia Council for the Arts and the Minister for the Arts.

Feel free to copy and paste the following to start your submission: I support the development of a National Cultural Policy. I also support ATYP and others’ Key Recommendations for a Youth Engagement Framework that includes cultural policy prioritisation, special funding from within the Australia Council for arts organisations that prioritise youth engagement, cross-portfolio funding streams and an independent Youth Advisory Committee for Australia Council and the Minister for the Arts because…

This is a once-in-decade opportunity to make a change that will benefit young people for the next decade to come – but you must submit by midnight 22 August, or risk becoming pumpkins 🎃
