2020 Martin Lysicrates Prize Cancelled

A statement from The Lysicrates Foundation

After much reflection, and discussion with our partners the Australian Theatre for Young People and Riverside’s National Theatre of Parramatta, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Prize this year.

The final event was due to take place on the 7th of September 2020, with a schools’ audience of over 600 young people aged 11-14 who would vote on the winning playwright.

However, we are not confident that schools will be allowed to go on excursions by this date, and this audience of young people is absolutely key to the democratic ethos of the Prize.

We understand and appreciate the effort writers across Australia have made in getting us a submission for the 2020 Prize, and this decision has not been made lightly.

We would like to confirm that:

– All submissions will automatically be entered into the 2021 Martin Lysicrates Prize, and

– Writers will be welcome to make a second submission to the 2021 Prize.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and appreciate your understanding during these unprecedented times.

Kind regards,
