Phaedra’s Love

Australian Theatre for Young People presents

PHAEDRA’S LOVE

BY SARAH KANE

Phaedra’s Love, 1996, is Sarah Kane’s modern adaptation of Seneca’s Phaedra.

Kane’s play explores the brutal nature of love, social relations, nihilism and belief through the story of an affair between a queen and her stepson. In this radical retelling of Seneca’s tragedy, the off-stage violence of classical theatre is thrust centre-stage.

Sarah Kane was one of the most talented and controversial young playwrights to emerge in Britain in the 1990s. She wrote Phaedra’s Love when she was only 25 and the play is an example of a brilliant, provocative play written by an outstanding young writer.

Content warnings: This production contains sexual references, adult themes and strong language and suitable for mature audiences only.
