ATYP plays a vital role in Australian society. Yes we uncover and celebrate the next generation of actors, writers, producers and storytellers. From the extraordinary talent of our past participants like Ambassadors Rose Byrne and Rebel Wilson to the rising stars of Australian theatre and screen, ATYP invests in talent. In 2019 we are proud to once again bring you a collection of the finest young artists in the country in a season to make you smile, to make you think and leave you inspired.
But the impact of what we do is much broader. At time when research reflects a growing sense of isolation and dislocation, ATYP is bringing young people together. Everything we do involves sharing ideas, telling stories, challenging and looking at the world through a different lens. We give the experiences, ideas and abilities of young people the prominence they deserve. The stories we tell reflect the breadth and wonder of human experience, from whimsy and fun to the extraordinary resilience of real-life explored on stage. Opportunities for young people have a space to share ideas, talk, challenge and be accepted has never been more important. ATYP creates that space.
2019 is a season that celebrates the joy of life. Intersection 2019: Arrival is an often hilarious look at the arrival of love, loss and the unexpected. Bathory Begins follows a class of public schools girls who accidentally murder their teacher on the day that the local private boys’ school visits on a social studies excursion. A fake social media troll terrifies everyone when she inexplicably enrols at the school of the kids who invented her in April Aardvark. Yve Blake’s epic musical Fan Girls, commissioned and developed by ATYP, takes us into the whirlpool of fan fiction. Even Follow Me Home, developed in consultation with over eighty young people who have experienced homelessness in NSW, celebrates their extraordinary resilience and hope. These beautiful new plays take touching, personal stories and wrap them in humour, spectacle and a touch of magic for audiences of all ages.
As always the productions are just the tip of the ATYP iceberg. For schools around the country we are very proud to offer ATYP On Demand, an online platform giving teachers and students access to extraordinary shows and learning resources. This is an Australian first, allowing access to world leading youth theatre productions. For FREE! There is also a world of programs that bring young people together with leading professional artists. Whether it’s a one-week holiday program, a playwriting retreat or an intensive masterclass, ATYP celebrates creativity and community here in Sydney and across the country. In the process we unlock self-confidence and inspire the imaginations of everyone we work with.
Come and be inspired, engaged and involved in 2019.
